The front brake on my 1978 cb750 has started locking on after use. Does anyone know if this is a common fault? A sharp tap with a rubber mallet frees it or I can drive the bike through it. Will stripping and reassembling the caliper fix it? Thanks in advance.

Since the caliper uses a pretty sturdy rubber O-ring. They can be stripped, and cleaned several times before needing replacement. So striping, and cleaning should do the trick. just make sure the piston does not have any deep pits.

Piston only. Caliper seemed to be fine. Rode 15 miles this evening, no problem. I think the steel piston will corrode preferentially to the Al alloy caliper hence the pitts in the piston.

Glad to hear it worked for you. I do not know if you are aware of the fact that break fluid will attract water. But it is the main reason that the metal parts corrode in a break system. You should flush your break system every year. As long as the caliper does not have any pits where the O-ring seats. It's good to go.

would it be possible to replace the front brake caliper with a modern caliper? and if so does anyone have any idea of what bike caliper would be compatible with an 81 cb750k? I am having the same issue and have a guy that will rebuild the caliper for a hundred bucks but I would rather replace it with a modern caliper if that would be possible. Thanks for the help in advance.

There is not really anything more modern, or technologically advanced then what you have. You could get a Brembo caliper $$$$$$$$
The calipers are so easy to rebuild you should give it a try. The kits for your caliper are around $15.00, and you do not need any special tools.
