Front sprocket retainer needed

I need whatever it is that holds the front sprocket on.My sprocket was off when i got the bike and i have no clue as to what retains it.I see a groove,is it just a big snap ring?I wouldn't think so.   If anyone can point me in the right direction,or has what i need ,i would be interested in buying it.  Thanks!

I see that my sprocket has two small threaded holes in it.It appears that some sort of plate is required.

There is a plate with notches that match the groves on the shaft. It slips on the shaft, and when it gets to the grove it turns a little. Then, you put two bolts in the holes in the sprocket to hold it on. Some bikes had a bolt, and washer on the end of the shaft (like Piute's). I do not know of any reason a snap ring/cir-clip would not work.
