Galloping idle?

heath1066
Suddenly (like the day after a long ride) this week, my idle is strange, sounds like galloping? Almost like it is missing one cylinder. Anyone see this before? Okay, stupid question, I'm sure someone has...

New Wrinkle, Went to move the bike for street cleaning, noticed some gas dripping from overflow tube. Moved bike (still weird idle) turned off petcock to stop drip from overflow. Moved bike back, forgot to turn on petcock. Idle seemed normal...

Sounds like you have a carb that is flooding. Thus the weird idle, and thus why shutting the fuel off fixed it ( when the level came back down to normal).

Floats rarely ever go bad, you probably need a needle/seat, or just clean the one you have.

So, I had a rebuild kit in a drawer, pulled the carbs right after work last night.  Cleaned and inspected, all the float needles were less than springy, plus I Had a LOT of rust and sludge in the bowls.  When I winter the bike looks like I have to seriously clean the tank. When replacing the needles, the float positions changed a ton.  I'm going to reinstall at lunch today, wish me luck...

Install a $3 paper element, inline fuel filter if you fit it. Never have sediment in your bowls again.  The in-tank filter socks are rubbish IMO.
