Gauges flash when my flashers flash

1978Cafe750f
So I have boggled myself on this one.  I don't ride when its dark out but was storing my bike the other day after sunset so i noticed an issue.

With my key in the ON position my gauge lights are on but my directional to do not flash.  If you turn them on they just stay lit.

If you go on positions further with they key to P my gauge lights turn off.  But when I tried my directional, they flashed ... but so did my gauges.

My questions are: why don't the directionals work in the ON position.  how/why do my gauges go off and flash in the P position.  and what is supposed to be the difference between ON and P.

Sounds like your bike is possessed. Wiring gremlins have created a ground problem. You turn signals are grounding through your gauges. The P position is, for parking. It should leave your front turn signal/running lights, and your tail light on.

wiring gremlins to say the least.  I think my winter task is going to consist of many cases of beers and many spools of wires.

Aren't the turn signals grounded thru the mounting nuts/bolts?

Yes they are grounded through their mounts. vintagecb750.com and others sell new wiring harnesses, for these bikes. Might be worth checking out.
