Going Baterryless

My74CB750
I've heard that one can go battery less with the use of a super capacitor, if one uses kick start only. This is the case for me. I'm looking for input on what super capacitor should be used. I've seen one on JP Cycles website for sale, but it states for use with magneto only. Does the 74 CB750 come stock with a magneto? I'm thinking not. Any advice would be appreciated.

Unfortunately the CB 750 does not have a magneto, or a permanent magnet alternator. This means it must have a battery to supply a charge to the alternator to magnetize it before it will charge, and your ignition will not work without any charge. However if you are going kickstart only, you can use a very small low amp 12 volt battery. I just hope you do not damage your kick start gear, or spring with all that kicking. Those are a real b@#$% to repair, not like the easy to repair electric starter.

Only way to completely ditch your battery is to convert to a self generating ignition (magneto) and lose your lights.

You can't run your lights directly off the charging system. It needs the battery, or some sort of battery, for a buffer/reserve.

Bikes with magnetos came two ways:
1: the system had an ignition coil only- e.g. dirtbikes
2: the system had an ignition coil and a lighting coil

If you can find a company that will build you a two-coil magneto then , yes, you can completely ditch that battery. And you will have the dimmest, most flickery lights ever. lol

These bikes, and all of their electrical systems, were designed to be used with a battery.

Basically, what Tools said. Sorry to burst your bubble. I'd love to have my bike battery-less. It'd be one less thing to buy.

If you're totally cool with kick only, and really dont want the battery to be visible, buy a tiny little lithium battery to hide where the starter goes.

I would avoid the lithium battery if the bike has the stock regulator.
The mechanical regulator isn't very compatible with lithium and its voltage requirements.
Oh it'll charge enough but it allows voltage spikes through that while a lead acid will shrug off, a lithium can be damaged by, some have even started on fire.

Now, if he has switched to a solid state, then he would be ok. He would just need to balance the battery every so often if it isn't capable of doing its own balancing.

Now, I do know a small 7 amp lead acid agm will work perfectly well, even with electric start as long as the bike starts good. Just don't get stuck in traffic a long time.

In the manual section, there is an article about magnetos that may be interesting. And may answer other questions you didn't know you had.
