Hello all! New(to me) CB questions!!

N.DiGio
First post, long time reader. Thanks to everyone for all the informations I've already seen. So yesterday I bought a 1981 CB750C. The battery is dead and the guy had to jump it with his truck but after just a little persuasion, it started right up. My plan is to strip it down to the frame, repaint the frame, gas tank, and rims. I also wan to rewire everything. My big questions are if there is anything I should go before I tear everything off and what components should be changed due to their age. Everything is original. I read the alternator winding should be changed no matter what. I plan on taking the engine to a shop to be tuned up. I'm hoping they can show me what to look for with the valve cam chains, valve clearance, cloth components, etc. Thank you for any and all help!!!!

Check your Voltages before you mess with the Charging system  I have an 82 CB750C and the Charging system is fine.  Brake pads and shoes, and any rubber all around is what I had to deal with.

Thanks. I'm just trying to cover my bases before I dig in. Also, do you know what these 2 metal blocks are? relays? And do you know off hand where any of these wires go?

Those two aluminum cases are part of the ignition system. They're called spark units by Honda, some people refer to them as CDI's.

Your harness appears to be pretty much unmolested. That's a rarity, and I'd be tempted to leave it alone. Wires rarely fail, but connectors often corrode. Checking and cleaning the connectors is about all you ever need to do.

I'm with Shiny, if the wires look good I'd just get a can of contact cleaner, clean all the connections really good and forget about it.
It's only illegal if you get caught.

If at first you don't succeed, use more lighter fluid

I see what you guys are saying. I'm just so worried that I'll be out somewhere and some old component will fail and I'll be stuck. I'm doing a lot of research into what components are cheap enough to just change, no matter what. Like the starter solenoid($10)

I have never had a starter solenoid go bad on a motorcycle. Stock electrics are very reliable. It is when the 12 volt electric specialists get busy on them that they become unreliable. If you are that worried that something may fail and you will be stranded 1000 miles away from home, join the AMA and get the free roadside assistance, or buy a new bike.

I see what you're saying. I already have AAA so I'll be covered with towing(knock on wood). I just want to make sure everything is going to be reliable. Maybe I'm underestimating how durable 25 year old wires and contacts are
