Ok I need some help, dont know where to start. In one of my last posts "went for a ride ..came off turned off bike..now no start, it turns over but won't start" Since then I have changed both coils with new ones, new plugs and wires (OEM Spec 0-ohms Resistance Value, feature Built-In (5000) ohm Ceramic Resistors) new pickup coils and new spark advance unit. OK here is the funny part..now it won't even turn over but the power is ok at all fuses, but I dont get the neutral light to come on no matter what I do...tried it with clutch in too. It is on the center stand, but it feels like it only is shifting up one gear and down one. Did not touch the gears...but had to take the shift lever off to acess the wires. What the hell did I do? HELP!!!

Do you get the headlight in and all that good stuff? Does the starter spin when you push the button? It could just be that your neutral bulb burned out. It is over 30 years old you know Have you checked to make sure your carbs are not plugged or the petcock is not plugged? You may have spark but if the fuel is plugged, well you know.
Another thing to check for is the kill switch. You may need to pop off the housing and jumper it to check.
From there, lay the plugs on the head and hit the starter and watch for spark. Works best in the shade on this test.

Nope the starter wont spin, is there a ground wire maybe somewhere I missed when I reassembled? Radio and lights work ok

And you have no kicker. I am guessing your solenoid might be going. On the left side you should see the solenoid, at least that is where mine is, there are 2 wire connections. Using something to touch both terminals and grounded for your hand, turn on your ignition and jumper these terminals. See if the starter spins then. If it does, the solenoid is bed. If it still does not, pull the starter and brace it and connect 12V directly to it. If it does not spin, then the starter is jammed.

OK Im stupid, I DON'T have any headlights, horn, turn signals etc...checked all fuses with meter ...all ok where to start? Did I leave a ground off, if so OMG where do I look now, took alot off at one time..I know, one step at a time, I got in a hurry. Has to be something simple and stupid...it all worked until I took her apart

On my 79 model there is one green wire that connects to the bolts for the ignition coils. They are under the fuel tank. Unless I'm mistaken, this is the main ground for the chassis/frame. This fixed a 1975 bike owned by a friend of one of my sons. You should be able to verify this by putting the + lead of your voltmeter on the positive terminal of the battery, and the - lead on the engine or other bare metal connected to the frame.
It's worth a shot. Find the schematic or wiring diagram for the bike, and track it down.
So many times it's the simple things that trip us up. Good luck, and let us know if you have any luck...good or bad. Luke M

Well if you have no lights or anything, check the ignition switch first. They do go bad, it is fairly common really. The connector on the bottom deteriorates and causes loss of connection. Wiggle it around with the key on. Also, get some contact cleaner such as CRC and spray the ignition and see if that helps.

LukeM thats why I wasn't getting power, it was the green wire, it slipped off the mounting bolt for the coils when I replaced them. Ok here's the latest..Im back to where I started. The bike cranks but it wont start. I am getting good spark, and gas. I replaced pickup coils, pulsers, spark advance, plugs, wires 2 new coils and it does exactly the same as before. Crank and no start!!

Well how is your timing?I mean it sounds like you got everything else replaced so there is not much left. You have the battery, kill switch, timing, or wiring. If you got jumpers, hook them up to a non-running car and try starting. It may be possible that battery is too weak for some reason.
Check your timing per the manual, it may just be off on timing of the spark and if that is the case, no start.
From there, if the kill switch is not making contact, you can crank forever and not start but then usually you have no spark.
I would go for timing or battery though.
OH! have you checked your compression? If it is really low, there will not be enough pressure built to fire the air/fuel mix.

Ok Timing sounds like what to check next..battery is new and stays on a trickle charger, I have a voltmeter installed on bike and it is good. I can't really set the timing without the bike running can I? What should I check...just make sure the index mark is between the advance marks? I can set with timing light once running..will those marks get me close even if the bike wont start?

Cant really see how to set the timing without the bike running. The spark advance is held in by a pin and the timing marks look ok, I tried moving the whole pulser assemblt both ways a bit ..same thing. It did fire up for a split second and let out a backfire that sounded like a stick of dyanmite and then cut off. I puzzled..guess my best bet is to try to get a trailer and take it to a shop, not many here in the mountains of NE PA. Open to suggestions tho...I bet its the carbs
