Help!!! (I think it's electrical problems)

Bentleytattoo77
Hey everyone!

I just bought an 81 cb750 that has been bobbed and stretched.
Here she is!

I have no knowledge on diagnosing or repairing bikes. So my guesses are complete guesses.
I just put a brand new 12V battery ( extreme magna power 220cca) from advanced auto parts ( link at the bottom). Started fine with electric start (no kick start on the bike). It rode really well for about forty min, and then started to bog down. I pulled into a gas station to see what was going on... And the bike would not start back up. When I would hit the electric start it would click. No turn over. I pouted for a couple of minutes and decided to try jumping it, started right up and would idle fine. I rode for a couple more miles and same thing happened.... Keep in mind battery only a hour old (pre charged battery). I did this several more times till I got home. Once I got home, I realized te break light would wol even though the key was out (bike was shut off).

I can't help but think the wiring is botched...

Symptoms/problems:

Battery dead an hour after purchase
Can't start with out a jump start
No turn over unless jumped
Acts up after riding a little bit.
Break light works when bike is off

I really really want to be on the road and enjoying this bike.

I appreciate any input or help towards Fixing this issue!

Thanks mike

Welcome to the forum.

That is a DOHC bike, so it won't have a kick start.

I'd say that it is pretty clear that you have a problem with your charging system.  Check this out:

Cool bobber! I hate to tell you, but the DOHC bikes have crapy charging systems, and yours is bad. The brake light coming on is not really a problem, but should be wired into a switched circuit. Right now it is wired straight to an open circuit.

OR! The charging system is fine, but a ''botched'' wiring harness is not allowing it to function properly.

But obviously, for one reason or another,it is not charging the battery. Best thing to do is download the FSM from here and diagnose the charging system. But you also need to check that wiring harness. No way voltage should be making it to the tail light with the key off. Good luck and keep us posted with what you find.

My $0.02: Start with the wiring harness. It obviously needs attention anyway.
