How to shorten forks

Would you happen to have before and after pics of how the bike sits? Can you go further than 2"? Did you lower the rear also?

I tried PVC but it was too thick. I just measured it at 1 1/18" O.D.. Just ordered a piece of steel with a 1" O.D. and .76 inner .112 wall. Hoping that works.

In case anyone else isn't sure about the allen bolt top caps on the DOHC bikes here's what I did.

To get the top caps off my 1980 cb750f. I used a M10 both with a 17mm head and 2 M10 nuts purchased at Lowe's. I locked the nuts on the bolt tightly then inserted the head of the bolt into the top fork cap and used a wrench to loosen it.

Long nuts/coupling nuts are an option, too. THough not always available local.

Good tip thanks. Also my pipe came in today for the spacers and it looks like it will fit great.

Not a bad idea.  I was going to ask you about that but found a 12 inch piece of pipe on Amazon pretty cheap and was able to order it with the proper diameters needed. Convenience is valuable though. You can also make them with holes that align to the holes in the stem and add a set screw so they say aligned.  That would make them better than just a cut off piece of pipe.  Anyone on this site should be confident in buying anything you made too!

Hi Tools1 great write up. I was wondering if this same procedure can be done with air assisted forks from a CB750KZ from '81? Hope you got the answer any way great write up.

Yes it will work on the DOHC forks. They are pretty much the same inside.

Reviving this from the dead. So looking at what you did to shorten the forks. With progressive springs, could you adjust the height by splitting the spacer between the top end of the spring and to the damper? I think I had to cut 2-2.5" spacers so if i wanted to lower it 1.5", I could cut 1.5" off and move it down to the damper and leave the difference at the top of the spring?
