I did a stupid thing today.

Ghost-Flame
I really don't want to seperate the cases. So I have been slowly going around the engine and inspecting my cases/covers for leaks. About a month ago I thought I had a bad oil seal under the sproket. After cleaning it up It is not leaking but the sprocket oiler and years of neglect are the problem here.

I looked under neath my dipstick cover and there is an old leak coming from under the cover which I found out is the oil pump housing. So I took the cover off not realizing that they use 1 gasket for the oil pump and the cover. After removing the cover I had to remove the oil pump.

I have been reading a lot of how to's and they all say stuff a rag in the oil ports before you start cleaning. So I did and got a little too ambitious. I accidently pushed a balled up paper towel from the oil pump port all the way to the oil pan who does that?

The more I futzed to get the paper towel out the further it went in until bam it's in the oil pan (It think) looks like I'll be at least be removing the oil pan.

Uhmmm....oops?

So the question is: can you snake a coat hanger with a hook on it and remove the paper towel? May not be able to get it all, though, if it's been sitting a while. It may be handy to get a small inspection camera to put in there, so you can see if you got it all.

Sorry Ghost.  Good luck, and I sincerely mean that.

That sucksI hate that for you,but the oil pan should not too bad of a chore.I know you didn't want to do it,but I'm sure you can do the job with no problems.

Is there any way possible to get a pic of your chain oiler? I know there is a lot of controversy over whether they exist or not. I have heard several times they do not exist, yet it is in my FSM.It even tells you how to adjust it,yet I can't seem to find it.

Good luck on your towel extraction

Luke and Shinny, Thanks for your moral support. The oil pan isn't a big deal really, I have the engine out of the frame and on a bench with the oil drained out. So I'll flip it over and support it with wood blocks only about 6 bolts I think. I already tried the coat hanger trick and the hook just tears at the end of the towel. But, you got me thinking. Shop Vac. duct tape a small piece of pvc to the end of my hose. Put the PVC flush with the oil port and suck it out... maybe.

I'm calling the chain oiler the wrong term. What I mean is the bolt that holds the sprocket on the out put shaft has an O ring on it. and mine is leaking. I'm not sure if the mating metal parts are damaged or I just need a new O ring. I'm the 3rd or 4th owner and based on the condition of other parts of the bike and engine this thing has had a lot of neglected maintenance.

Ghost and I both have DOHC's but I have seen and removed the primary chain oiler on my 900 if you're interested...

The coat hanger idea was worth a shot.  But the Shop Vac may work better. Good luck. Pass on any news, good or bad.

the primary chain is inside the transmission, am I right? I'm talking about an oil leak at the drive chain sprocket shaft/output shaft that is outside. My bolt that holds the sprocket on is leaking.

I Got the paper towel Out!   Yippee I found a dental pick with an off set, shallow angled hook. I forced it into the paper material as far as it would go, twisted it til it stopped. I got my vice grips, locked on to the pic and pulled and everything came out clean as a whistle!
