I'm new, and I need your advice please.

rlc2502
Hi guys

I am quiet new on the motorcycle scene, I've had a few bikes over the years and know the basics of maintenance. I have just purchased a 1983 cb 750 for basically nothing! It's not the best looking bike by far but I can see huge potential in her ;-) she runs besides been stood since 1999!!! And has covered 32k miles.

Where should I start regarding finding out what state the engine is in? I don't want to spend hard earnt cash then realise I bought a dog... I can do some stuff with help from a Haynes manual but engine wise I'm a rookie lol.

My first thought was cafe racer and then I saw a picture one of your members posted on another post

I need to keep a level head and get some good foundations sorted (the engine) and then I can let my imagenation run wild

Look forward to your replies

What do you think is wrong with the engine? You said it runs, does it run poorly? The only part of an engine that would be affected by age would be some gaskets, and seals. And the carburators often get gummed up from sitting.

Hi tools

Thanks for your reply, then engine actually sounded okay when I viewed the bike but I know the carbs definitely need a good clean etc and setting up. I've took off the carbs and tank etc to clean as its been stood so long I don't know how long previous petrol has been in there!

Would you advise me to open up the old beast? If so what should I replace? I don't want to end up over my head if you get me?

Thanks again

I would clean the carbs, change the oil, and do a tune up. Then I would ride the crap out of it.

You might do a compression test. That will tell you if the rings and valves are in good shape. If so, you should be good aside from maybe gaskets.

Your photo doesn't show any air box (air filter). Do you have it? You will find it difficult to get it to run propperly without it, as the CD or CV type carburettors need some restriction to operate as they were designed to.

Hi

Yeah I do have the airbox but I think I'll need new rubbers they have not aged to well. Would I be best off buying a full gasket set for the engine to be on the safe side??

Cheers guys :)

You can often get a full gasket set cheaper then buying a few gaskets piecemeal.

Unless the engine has been submerged in something, or someone has put something other then oil in, just change it. However I am Sarg will be along to sing the praises of Seafoam soon.

Like these guys said, change the fluids, if you want to run a compression check on all 4
cylinders to make sure one or 2 aren't in line, that's cool too.  Maybe pull up a thread
on checking cam chain tensions.  Besides that, reinstall that airbox and run a tank or 2 of 93 octane
thru it, and ride it.
