Ooh...that IS an early engine. It has those pretty fins on that head.  Nice find, bud. That would be an awesome bike to have. And is that a magneto?? Toss on a 21'' front, rake the neck until the bottom frame tubes ran parallel to the ground, decent set of bars and ride. Fun,fun, fun.

I need extra $,too. A 2 door 67 or 68 Impala just popped up about 2 miles from my house. Solid and looks to be very complete. Very tempted to stop, but afraid it will follow me home...

You know, I was wondering if that was a magneto, but I am pretty sure it is a distributor.

Re: I need some of Luke's extra cash.

I recently came into some extra pocket money. Got an award at work for reporting for duty, clean and sober, on a daily basis! (J.K. It was part of a team award). With my new found wealth I went strait to the Harley dealer to put a down payment on a new Street 750. Sadly, $50 down wasn't enough to qualify me for financing. Instead, I put the $50 on this wonderful example of Chinese motorcycle craftsmanship (About the same quality as an HD):

It's a 150CC something or other. Not running yet, got it to turn over though. Ignition switch and kill switch are both bad so I couldn't get any spark without tearing out a bunch of wires. So I ordered news ones from China instead. I'm going to strip off all the street stuff and just use it as a trial bike.

So, while I'm waiting for parts to arrive from China, I come across this homeless puppy:

I had to go take a look because, well it was cheap. I mean, heck, a 87 450 Rebel with only 2,500 miles for only $150, I had to see it. Well turns out it's been parked since 1994 with gas in it  (why do people do that). The carbs were both gone along with the airbox. But it had been stored inside a shed so it wasn't rusty (other than the tank, yuk!). So made the seller an offer he couldn't refuse. I was thinking maybe I could scare up a set carbs and tank off ebay and fix the bike up for my wife to learn on. But when I got it home I found zero compression on cylinder #1. Bad intake valve I think. I decided to just go ahead part it out.

I might put the front end on my CB-550, looks like it'll fit with roller bearings. Same shaft diameter and stem height looks about the same. I just love the wheels and the light/speedo setup on the Rebel.

It also has forward controls which could be adapted to something else or the parts used to create rearsets. Lots of potential.

I've already sold the dipstick on the Rebel forums. Only $92 to go to break even on this turkey.

I think I have a head and cylinders for that Rebel. The machine shop I use will do the valves for $50.00 if it needs them done. You are welcome to them if you want them.

Thanks. But I think I'd be in it too much by the time I found the carbs and other items it needs. Better off parting it since it doesn't have a title anyways. However, I guess I could try and fix the valve and sell the engine as a complete unit. I need to pull the engine to remove the valve cover and see what's going on. It just blew air out of the intake when I put compressed air in the cylinder, no mater how the engine was rotated. So the valve is hung open. Good compression on #2 so the cam/timing chain must be ok.

Could be. I don't hear any bad noises when it's cracking over.

So I got this old thing running pretty good. Had to get a new stator cover (it was cracked and leaking oil badly), new carb and CDI unit. And about a dozen spokes for the front wheel. Also got some cosmetic items and used a few parts I had in the shed (front fender, headlight, handlebars). All in all, I guess I have about $300 in it now. It's been a fun project. These little engines are durable and respond well to basic performance mods, like jetting and pod filters.

Had so much fun with it I found 2 more Chinese orphans and adopted them as well.

A little 125 dirt bike:

It needed a new stator, CDI, carb, etc. Runs good, just waiting on some new spokes for the rear wheel.

I also got its big brother, a 250 (really only 230CC) enduro. I got it to run (just need an ignition switch and battery). Haven't done much else with it yet.

Mmmm, dirt bikes... I spent a lot on time in the air on those things!
