INSTALLING PISTONS QUESTION

RodneyCB750K1979
This evening, I tried installing pistons with new rings and somehow I managed to break two compression rings on No. 1 and No. 4 pistons. I used hose clamps to compress the rings, had No. 2 and No. 3 pistons up, and used a soft rubber mallet to gently drive the cylinder down.  Pistons 2 and 3 went in fine. I removed their hose clamps and then started inserting pistons 1 and 4. The breakage occurred on the second compression rings.  I don't know how this happened.  I ordered another set of rings and will not use hose clamps next time. I don't know what else to do differently.  Comments?

I have never had any problems using hose clamps. Maybe you had them too loose. Also I don't like the wood blocks you used to hold the pistons. They don't look stable to me, and are too tall. Try using some 1X4 ripped down to go between the studs, and cut a slot in them.
