After a lengthy search for a new helmet I have settled on the "raw" Icon Variant. I had been using the old school Bell open face helmet for about 2 years. Not because it's super safe (shoulda been concern No 1) but mainly because they look decent and Steve McQueen wore one. Can't go wrong with that. Ever. But after continuous use the padding had flattened out and at high winds the thing would protect my neck, but not my head. Because I am a vain basterd I could not bring myself to buy one of the usual full face helmets. In my opinioin they dont go too well with an older bike ( every time a harley passes by and the rider wears one of them I cringe). But also because most of them have hideous graphics. It seems most full faced helmets look like a bit too brawny for me, too my like streetfighter. Trying too hard in a way. Anyway, the boss insisted I get a full face, I wanted something like a enduro with the chin guard and I finally settled on the Icon. $350 seemed a bit steep but my birthday's coming up and nobody can argue against spending lots of moolah for safety! In a word, the thing looks legit. I am in love with it. Wear it at night and under the shower. Some reviews stated they run small but I measured my noggin and the fit is right on. The outside looks unfinished. On purpose. They just laminated all the super spacefibers they use and put a clear coat on top. Thats it. The finish is somewhat off-white ( Aggie-White as some call it) and it actually goes well with the red inside. Added were one clear and one smoke shield, some cleaning stuff and a chin curtain. A what? Yep, a chin curtain. Never heard about it coming from open face, but it keeps wind creeping in from below. Kinda nice. I thought visibility might be an issue with a full face, but it's actually pretty effing good. So, if anyone is on the lookout for a new helmet that doesn't look too new for a 30 year old crotch rocket, give the Variant a shot.
