Ignition Coils.

runabout879
I just bought an '81 CB750K recently. I've been having some issues getting it started. I removed the coils, and one of them is cracked. After looking online for the coils, affording them brand new right now is not going to be possible. Does anyone know where I might be able to get some used coils that will fit for under $75? According to most sites I've seen, all of the CB bikes and the GoldWings use the same coils. Thank you for your help!

This site shows them out of stock. Seems to be what all of the "cheap" sites are showing.

search for your year and make of bike in ebay. That's where I found mine and it works great! Just buy from a place with a good rating!

Use the search box on this forum and put in GM coil mod. On my 1982 CB750FZ (DOHC)I used two second hand Buick  (or in Australia, Commodore) V6 coils, ($40) added a coil relay, fitted universal electronic ignition leads, opened up the plug gaps. It starts easier, and runs smoother.

I was able to find them on crconlinecatalog.com. Thank you for all your help. Once I got them in the mail, I put them on, then used some dielectric grease in all the electrical connections for the ignition system. Once I got all that together, I hit the starter button, and after a few cranks, it started firing again. About a minute later, it was idling smoothly, just under 1500. Took it down the road, and it was pushing me back in the seat. Even my '81 Goldwing didn't have that much power.

not trying to be horrible, just wonder what "qualifies" you people to do these ridiculous "mods" to your poor old motorbikes?!!?
to the guys who have trouble starting your bikes,  try checking your compression , if your valves are stretched it wont hurt to adjust them..not bolt on CAR coils with awful homemade brackets, and for those of you who give the "thumbs up" to the goober who triumphs  over bolting on new handlebars......I dont know, maybe some real fabrication just takes too long?? are you all mad?  were the hell am I? the twilight zone ?
I cant stand this silliness , but thats just me, anyone else feel this way?

Nope, no one else does. Everyone else knows as long as it is safe, bikes are made to be customized.

To inform you a little, the gm coil mod has been around decades. It is a tried and true method of making a much stronger ignition. It is certainly no worse than double springing points. And considering that coil brackets are not exactly high tech, fabbing up new ones doesn't make them awful. If someone used zip ties, sure that's bad, but if they hold the coils securely and offer proper grounds, then there is no issue.

As for the "goober", everyone starts somewhere, even you. Around here, we have encouragement for those who are knew and learning something they didn't know before. I assume when you first did something, you felt proud of it, even if it was something small.

As for qualifications, we aren't working on rocket engines.

Add the fact that at 45 years old, parts for these bikes can be hard to find and damned pricey when you do. A lot of these mods are intended to overcome this and to take advantage of improvements in technology. And as Re-run said, we were all goobers at one time.

If it keeps my bike up and running, there's nothing silly about it.
