Ignition amplifier??

Okay, looks like we are making some headway now.  My buddy does have another question though.  He found something called the ignition amplifier.  He ran the test on it the Haynes manual told him to run and it failed.  He took it off and looked at it the insulation around the wiring had melted.  What confused him was that the bike still ran decent, he expected it would not run at all.  Anyone know what this part does?
