Lack of power...?

Manny
Hi guys!

Having fixed the headlight following your kind advice, now I am moving on trying to fix other bits.
In the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that the bike has somehow lost some power. I have not done anything yet hence I am here again asking you for advice! Could it be the chain, sparks, carbs????

Also, another point is that when I switch the bike on it struggles to saty on unless I play a bit with the throttle.... if I don't do this the bike stay on for a minute or two and then goes off.

I have practically no experience on mechanical stuff so you may fthink that the asnwer is quite obvious!

Cheers!!!!

This sounds like you have some bad gas, or sludge in the tank plugging things up. Try cleaning the tank out then running some "Seafoam" through the fuel system.

Hi Tools,

I will try cleaning the tank to see what happens. What would that fix? The lack of power or the bike going off after being on for a couple of min?

Cheers!

I hope both. It sounds like after running, for a few minutes the bike is starving, for fuel. After it sits a few minutes the float bowels filling up again letting it run again.

Re: using Seafoam in the gas.  I think the manufacturer recommends 1 ounce per gallon of gas in the tank.  Some recommend more, depending on which forum you visit.  However, I would go with 1 ounce per, over a few tankfuls.  It does help get rid of crud and buildup in the fuel system.  The spray product is good for fogging the carb inlets, but any decent carb cleaner will do the same as Seafoam spray.

Fogging in this case is lightly spraying the carbs' air inlets until they look clean, then spraying it heavily into the carb inlets until the engine dies.  Then you wait about 5-10 minutes for the product to soak in and clean out the airways.  Then restart the engine.  Be prepared for LOTS of smoke and stumbling as everything that got loose works its way through the engine.  Of course, you can do the same thing by removing the carb assembly and cleaning each carb, but for some this is an easier workaround.

It seems like in the UK they don't sell the one that I need to put in the tank. For the carbs, they sell the spray but it cost about 60 dollars!!!!

Would any carb cleaner do for the carbs? Is there any other product that I can use in the tank?

Cheers!!!!!

WhatNo Seafoam? I would inquire around, maybe at the parts store about brands that are popular there. I am sure there will be something similar, or just as good. I really like the cheap Autozone store brand carb spray here. Do you have Aotozones in the UK?

Re: Lack of power...?

Hi Tools... I found "Red Line Motorcycle Fuel System Cleaner" which apparently does the same thing as the Seafoam..... After putting this stuff in the tank and letting run through the system, do I HAVE to spray the cabs inlets anyway?

Cheers!!

It's up to you weather, or not you want to spray the inlets, but I would. Does not take long, and will keep things cleaner.

Re: Lack of power...?

If the carb bowls are not filling quickly and then you have a fuel blockage somewhere.  Check the fuel hose first and be sure it is clear. Next check the inline filter (if you have one). If not that, drain the tank and remove the petcock.  It has a screen that sits up inside the tank..pull it out also as it may be clogged.  Check the the petcock is working and not clogged.  Having done those things and if you still have a problem then you will probably have to pull the carbs...clean them thoroughly...blow compressed air through all the orifices and fuel tubes.  When you attach a fuel source to the carbs fuel intake...the floats should fill very quickly.

good luck
