My start button doesnt work

fixnfiddle
I bought this 81 cb750f locally for 200 bucks and im trying to get it on the road. It starts up and stays running if i bypass the solenoid and jump the starter. however the start button doesnt work?

Are there any wires that could not be hooked (or hooked up wrong) up to make this happen or do i just need a new solenoid? Thanks in advance for the help.

The clutch has a safety overide switch. You should see a wire coming out from your clutch handle mount. The starter will not operate unless you pull in the clutch as you press the starter button. Reconnect your solenoid put the bike in neutral, pull in the clutch and try it.

My 81 CB750F SS does not have a switch at the clutch lever but it has a neutral safety switch. It has to be in neutral to engage the starter. Also make sure the kill switch is in the center position.

AH! The clutch safety is probably it because I was wondering if wires were supposed to be hooked up there. I'll try tinkering around with it over the week end thank you:)

Regarding your clutch safety, don't try and open it up where the wires go into the lever. Open your headlight and make sure the wires are connected to the correct color leads. Clean them if needed. I've seen many bikes over the years where people just hack up the wires cause they had no idea what they were doing. You do have the shop manual with the wiring diagram for your bike right? If not you are wasting time and money.
