Im new to this forum and new with a Honda. I have alot of experience working with sportbikes but I have never touched a older bike. Anyways I had some family problems a few years ago and my dad sold his 74 750 to help me pay some bills and I wanted to try and replace it. I couldn't find a good 74 750 for the right price but I did find a 79 750k. I really want to make it as close as I can to a 74. I need to know if a gas tank, seat, and a rear fender will work from a 74 on his 79. I know the side covers will be a little problem considering the 74 had an oil tank on the right side. I can figure that out tho. Any advise will be a big help. Thanks

Apples and oranges. Will not work. The 1979 was DOHC Completely different in every way.
You need any CB750 between 1971 - 1975
I would look for a 73,74,75.

So the frame on a 79 is completely different?

Yes, the engine is also different. You might stuff an sohc motor in after some frame work but the overall look will be different anyways.
You COULD get a 77/78 and change the seat and tank but the 77/78 seats open on the right side instead of the left.
Finding anything in the 69 - 76 range should be easy though. Keep in mind that 69-72 are usually more expensive but all those years will look similar. There are a good chunk on ebay right now and that should give you at least a close price range to what you will need to spend.
In fact, on this very site towards the bottom, a person is selling a 71. drop him a line.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

Right on. Thanks for the info

If, you have fabrication equipment, and skills, it could be done. I have never seen it done, but it is a cool idea. Like, you were talking about. Put the older seat, and tank on it, for that classic look.

Thank you. Everyone else was kinda making me feel stupid. I think it'll turn out badass. I know its not going to look just like a 74 but it would have a custom classic look. Basically I was just wondering if everything would just bolt right on to the 79 frame. Looks like im gonna be doing some fabrication lol. I started taking it apart today and now im looking for parts. I'll post pics when its done. Thanks

I am all about building as well as riding the bikes. I am always looking, for some new cool thing, and what, you are proposing will be cool. If it was bolt on everyone would be doing it. Also I don't think your Dad will care if it is a DOHC model. If, you build it he will love it. I guarantee it.

I agree with Tools,if you build your Dad a DOHC I'm sure he will appreciate it just the same. Btw,kudos to you for being a good son! Good luck with your project!

You guys are right. My dad is will appreciate it even if it was a moped lol. I want to build him something custom that will bring back memories of his bike he sold. Im excited as hell to get this done for him so we can ride together this summer and I have never been able to do anything like this for him. Im 26 years old and I have had nothing but sportbikes and working on his bike is making me want to sell my Gsx-r and buy an old Honda. Tools and Shinyribs, thank you for the advice and the motivation on this build. We all need more riders out there like you guys!!!! I have about a month until its riding time here in Indiana so im going to be hard at. Pictures will be coming. Thanks guys!!!!

I used to live in Renesselaer. Still have family around Lafayette. Did, you know about the VJMC's 35th anniversary National Rally at Spring Mill State Park, IN 8/12?

Yes the frame is very different.
Also if you get a 1978 CB750 and put the earlier model tank
There could be a 1 inch gap between the seat and gas tank.
I have not actually tried it .

Im on the other side of Indy from lafayette. I havent rode much in the last 2 years but when we do ride most of the time we go south down into brown county. Alot of nice roads down there. Im going to try and do alot more riding this year. I work on a farm so my work is heavy during riding season. I only went on one ride last year and it was for my buddy's 4 year old son that has a brain tumor. Gonna do alot more riding this year tho.
