Need technical info on strength of wood beam…..

MarkPBG
This post was updated on .
I can't afford a motorcycle trailer yet, so I wanted to get a few ramps to load the bike up onto pickups when I need to have a pro work on it. Are 2x10 pine boards strong enough for ramps when used with these ramp ends?….

If they're not, I'll just wait until I can get these…..

In 1972 I had to make a choice...quit riding...or quit drinking.  God says it's safe to get back in the saddle now...at least I'm still alive...and feel more alive with the wind in my face!  Now riding "Helen Black"...1982  CB750SC.

I use a ramp that I made from two pieces of 2 by 4 and some half inch plywood that I had lying around.  Works fine.

An average pickup 1985 Chevy Beds what 3 feet from ground your going to need at least a 12 foot board 14 would be lot better ,your Lil 2 by is going to bow a lot, will need support in a few spots .The biggest problem with these is the bottom of the bike hitting the ramp at the top
you measure and think it will but didn't count for the bow,
You can ride a bike up a 2 by 10 well blocked in the right places ,(done it onto a flatbed Dodge Dually 4 foot high once)16' 2x10 had cylinders blocks under for braces,Ya never have a vid cam. when doing something so dumb.

Have used more ditches and tailgates then anything else.

Why I own An El Camino With air shocks drops down to about a foot and half .Simple one man job

If i did use boards I would add strength with a 6 foot piece of angle iron on either side to help with the bowing. My driveway slopes up, so when the pickup is backed in and the tailgate down, the ramp only needs to be 3 feet long and it's nearly straight. My damn driveway has a steep slope.

I saw that, but I found a PAIR of 75" steel ramps online for that price.

Un-treated boards are made of white pine.Pressure treated lumber is made of yellow pine and is MUCH stronger.I have two treated 2x8x8's that i use to load 4 wheelers, lawn mowers...I nailed a few strips of shingles to them for added traction and they work fine.I bought a set of those ramps ends you see at Northern for about $20 ( i think),added two eye-bolts to the bottom of them so I cant ratchet-strap them to the rear bumper to keep them from sliding. They are much stronger than the arched aluminum ramps i paid alot of money for.The heaviest 4 wheeler i ever loaded with them was right over 800 lbs.You should be fine.My truck is a '01 Silverado 4x4 2500 HD with 6" suspension lift and 35's.The 8 footers are pretty steep, but i ride everything up them.I imagine you want to push yours up.All in all,you should be fine with a 2x10 treated board,IMO,but the length needed will be up to you.

I once put the Toolmatic into the back of the Toolhauler using a 1 X 10 X 6 foot long. It bowed, but held just fine. I have used a 2 X 8 X 8 foot long on many occasions without problems. I have had over 450 pounds on a 2 X 10 X 8 foot walk board. Just get a good plank with straight grain, and no knots that run from the side into the center of the board.

So, Tools knows "wood". Has he done a lot of "hands on" with his wood?

I know!  After transporting my CB750SC in the back of my Explorer (have 2...his and hers) I knew I would want an alternative.

If I had a welder...I'd of had one built already!
