New guy here.

atm32217
Hi everyone. my name is Adam and I just decided to register today although I have been lurking around for quite some time. I have a 1981 cb750f supersport. I bought it as a project and something to tinker with. 400 bucks non running. Spent some time with the carbs and about 8 hours later got her running. lucky break I think. Still having some issues there but thats where the tinkering part comes in.

Now I am having the dreaded charging nightmare. Stator cover has been broken due to PO letting her drop. pulled the cover and took some readings from the rotor. 3.9 across the board stone cold. cleaned the rings took another reading 4.2 pretty consistently. Started the bike back up hoping that I had fixed the problem and she still isnt charging. Thinking a good r/r and rotor would do the trick but am scared to commit to buying both at the moment. Anyone have any suggestions about the rotor readings or maybe another test I could use to confirm the issue? Thanks for the support. I did many searches in hopes of getting one step closer to the problem. This place is filled with wonderful information.

The best place to start is with the FSM, free download from the home page.  It will give you the factory testing procedures, and what the readings should be.  Sorry if you have already done this, but your posting is a little vague on what you have/have not done already.  Cheers!

i havent done the fsm procedures yet. I probably should have started there instead of scouring the net. Just tested the rings on the rotor and the yellow wires on the stator. the rotor is the part i am mostly worried about. the rectifier is not too expensive but if the rotor is bad the rectifier will burn out. probably just will replace both.

Either way the plans for the bike are mostly minimal. Get rid of the bars up front, paint and new upholstery on the seat. Probably wont do anything too wild unless I come in to some time and money.  I was really thinking about flipping it at first but now am starting to like the feel of it. It rides really nice.  I really want to have one that is very reliable and a good cruiser on the highway and in town.
