New oil leak problems

This post was updated on .
I'm back again and so soon. Well, I have developed a oil leak and I cant seem to find it. My bike and engine are real clean and I still cant see where its coming from. well I just bought the bike and it started leaking from some place near the external cylinder stud.(it's not the stud). I asked the guy why he didn't tell me it was leaking and he said it never leaked unless there was too much oil. so I humored him and removed some oil and it still leaked. I called him again and told him it still leaked and asked what type of oil he had just recently used and he said the dealer said to use synthetic. so he used it. I figure with the detergents and all that's why it started to leaking and being 31 years old and having 45,000 miles the syn loosened up all the sludge and all and now its leaking. As soon as I found out about the oil I changed it. I was only able to get 30weight and my manual said to use either 10w-40 or 30. it still leaks and I don't know what to do. It only leaks while ridding not sitting or idling or revving.
Is there anything I can do besides change the base gasket. Different oil ,additive or? even if it is a temp help till I can change out the gasket..

Leaks somewhere around here I think.

Is it possible that it's leaking out of the cam chain adjuster (above that bolt - not shown in pic) and leaking down onto it?

The cam chain adjuster is a fairly common spot for a leak and it's a much easier seal to get to.

Do you know if he put car oil synthetic in it?

I would not put any additives in to stop the leak.  Way too many small passageways that could get blocked.  I would sooner clean up a small leak than repair a seriously damaged engine.

It's no leaking from the cam chain adjuster. There was a small leak from it but I fixed it. I check and clean after every ride so I know its coming from the area in the pick.

I have no idea if he used car oil. He said he used what the Honda dealer said to use.

Can I or should I use Lucas motorcycle stabilizer with the 30w I used or replace with 40w or?
I'm thinking the thicker the oil the less will leak.

The cylinder case in that pic looks to be a totally different color than the engine cases. Do you know if the engine has been apart? May be a bad base gasket after all. I'm not saying that it is, I really don't know, but the difference in the colors would lead me to suspect the engine has been apart at some time. Could be other reasons, though.

Not to be a smart ass but have you tried snugging the nut? It doesn't require a lot of torque so don't crank down on it too hard, it would really suck to snap off the stud. It is very possible the only way to stop a base gasket leak is to replace it

I wouldn't hold any faith in an additive correcting the leak. For the most part I think they are snake oil gimmiks not to mention being bad for the clutch friction plates. Also the viscosity isn't going to effect a leak much. That said, I don't know if I have ever seen straight 30w motocycle oil. Usually it's 10W-40 or 20W-50.
