Noob alert!!

Kube
Hello everyone.  I inherited my dads old 79 750f ss which has been sitting for over ten years in his garage. Unfortunately he did nothing to prepare it for long term storage so I'm praying I can bring it back to life.  Since I have been playing with it I haven't been able to get it into neutral.  at least I dont think so but I was looking at the cover next to the gear selector pedal and saw a diagram that fom top to bottom it said 5432n1  I know its a 5 speed but I had assumed that all the way up would be neutral and all the way down would be 5th.  Am I wrong?  also as I was trying to get it into neutral I suddenly was only able to get two different gears.  I managed to find a third where before I was able to get 4.   Sorry for the long winded post but I'm a bit confused and im hoping I wont have to tear the tranny apart.  As far as I know the bike ran fine when it was parked, dad just lost his nerve when as a police officer he was on a call to a nasty accident.

First is at the bottom.

Neutral is never easy to find.

Thanks. I've ridden before but this will be my first "grown up bike" lol  do you have any idea why I lost gears?  I'm hoping once I can get it fired up it will loosen everything up and work at least reasonably well

You might want to turn the rear wheel while shifting the gears. That should enable the gears to line up to one another and you will find all 5 plus neutral. Neutral is a half click up from first or a half click down from second.
