Ok.....I rewired things so that it goes: hot to fuse, fuse to horn, horn to button, and button to ground.  2.5 amp horn so using 5 amp fuse.  Horn still only works if I tap on it and if I honk it too much, the fuse blows.
Feedback from the gang?

Sounds like a bad horn, shorting out, intermittently open circuit.  I'd replace the horn with a known good unit.  Then re-check your wiring, to make certain you have good connections -- crimp-on connectors can be flaky; soldering them is best, using electronic, rosin-core, solder only.  Best of luck.  Cheers!
