Oh carb boots

bsporty
So... I figured I'd do a little maintenance on my bike.Got new spark plugs. Not too bad.Wanted to check/change the air filter. So I research it... Supposed to be 2 bolts to take off the bottom part of the box.Nope.Someone hacked the crap out of my airbox.Had to take the whole thing off only to find a nice clean air filter anyway.Ok.
Gotta put her back together so I can ride tomorrow.NOPE.
I cannot for the life of me get the carb boots back on.I tighten the clamp and they just pop off.I spent 2 hours watching them just pop off. What the hell am I doing wrong? It's just a damn clamp! I'm so upset.
Am I going to have to buy new ones?

On the airbox side, the clamps do not need to be very tight. It does not require the really tight seal there like it does between the carbs and head where the vacuum must be kept. On the airbox sine, you are mostly keeping dirt out, and directing the air.
Sometimes when attaching the airbox boots, I will use the side/shank of a screwdriver to push on the boots, and hold them in place while tightening the clamp with another.

Thanks for the reply Tools.
Do they go in any particular order?
Also, I dont remember seeing any clamps on the air box side.. Just have clamps that mount to the carbs.
I will try the screw driver trick though!

Yes, I am referring to where the rubber boots from the airbox attach to the carbs. They can be a PITA. I am not sure if yours need to be in any certain order, I do know that the ones for the SOHC's are all the same. If they are really dried out, and hard, you could boil them in a mixture of 1QT water to 2 OZ winter green oil for 45-60 minutes. This will soften them up, and make them more pliable.
Also your photo link did not work. Just use the "insert image" above the message box to add photos here. It is really easy to do on this site. It will let you get them right off your computer.
