Oil Feed

kleinklub
Hello all,

I'm rebuilding a CB750K7 chopper and I've just got round to filling the oil tank. I thought it a good idea to prime it first so turned it over (first on kick, then on starter) to get some oil flow. The problem is that nothing is appearing on the gauge (I've got one of those little ones attached to the gallery). I removed the gauge and no oil in the gallery.........Should there be oil present after turning over on the starter only?

Thanks,

Klein

After I do a rebuild of an engine I always crank the engine with the spark plugs out until I get oil pressure, so the answer is yes you should build pressure with the starter. Try without the plugs so that you reduce the stress on the engine components thus not risking damage and the engine will spin faster to help the oil pump do its job. After you get pressure and replace the plugs turn the engine over with the kill switch off until you get pressure before starting for the first time. I like to do this if the bike has been sitting for a long time.

Thanks for reply. I've cranked it (plugs out) in 10 second bursts but the gallery is dry. I removed the feed pipe and oil comes out fine. I had to replace the hoses and I think I got it right but is the feed on the engine the most rearward of the two (closest to back of engine)? Should I crank it for longer or is it time to drop the pan and look at the screen?

Thanks

It has been a long time since I have worked on a single cam ,but I believe you are correct about the feed line location.Maybe some one with a single cam can confirm this. The length of time to crank the engine is more of a judgement call, you don't want to overheat the starter motor, but it seems to be ok try cranking it a bit longer. It is never a bad idea to check the pick up screen ocasionally especially if you don't know the history of the bike regarding oil changes.

Jus one word of caution. If you do have to drop the sump off the bike and remove the oil pump for repairs etc, it is worthwhile priming the pump to remove the risk of an airlock . I`ve seen this happen on numerous occasions on bikes and cars where an oil pump as either been replaced with a new one or the existing pump has been stripped and repaired. Then the pump has been reinstalled and when the motor fires up the oil pressure light or gauge fails to register, and you have to go through the whole darn process all over again and prime the pump. So take my advice for what it worth and prime the pump before you put it back in. Or face  the consequences . Your call
