Oil System

Hoko
What parts in the oil system on old SOHC bikes are weak and could possibly leak and cause the engine to lose oil pressure and what should they be replaced with?  I would like to make sure this never happens.

As long as the bypass in the filter housing is working right, there isn't much. Mainly the filter screen and pump. Keep the screen clean and every so often check the pump clearances.

A bigger issue is clogs in the oil galleys in the head. Use a good oil with good detergents, such as rotella, and you can minimize this risk.

About the only problem I have ever heard of with the SOHC is that they are highly allergic to RTV Silicone.

The o-rings that seal the oil pump to the engine shrink and will leak. It won't really show up on a gauge (trust me) but it can cause a loss of pressure. I replaced mine on my chopper and it started shifting better. So replaced the ones on my '76F and IT started shifting smoother, too. Easier to find neutral as well.

Maybe it won't lose so much pressure to cause damage to the engine, but it can affect that countershaft thingy in the tranny and allow it to kinda shift sloppy.

Sorry. I know that's a vague explanation. I can't really explain what all is going on, I just know I saw definite improvements by doing this.

Thx for that info, I'm going to be cleaning that screen soon anyway, I can replace the oring then. :)  So, why is RTV Silicone bad for the oil system?

Because it squeezes out inside, and then breaks off in little balls, and clogs up the oil passages. Just ask Shiny about it.
