Oil tank over the frame, under the seat.

boldreel
I want to weld a new oil tank for my ´77 K7 and put it on the very back of the frame under my cafè seat (to get that open look in the frame). My concern is that the oil lines will be at least triple the length and the oil will be stored higher than original...will this have an effect on the amount of oil floating through the system or will it be the same. Does anyone have any experience with this and maybe some good advise.

The pump is a positive displacement pump. I for safety sake would do this test to make sure it will be ok.
1. Find an oil pressure gauge and hook it up.

2. Start your bike with the stock setup. Read your pressure cold and at normal operating temp. Write these temps down.

3. Let the Bike cool down so it is back to being cold temp. "avoids you getting burned"

4. Figure our the length of lines you will need and add 6 inches to it. hook up your tank at the heightit will be or maby a LITTLE higher.

5. Repeat step 2.

I would post your results on here so other know if it is a good or bad idea. ANY sign that something is wrong ABORT the test and let us know please.

Oh one thing i would do this with new oil. but the addes line length will change the amount of oil to add.

Ok I will try this. Why the xtra 6 inches oil line? I will make the test in a couple of months but will post the results. I figure I will measure out exactly how much xtra oil is in the longer oil lines and deduct that in the size of the oil tank so that the amount of oil in the system will stay the same.

Extra oil lines length is mainly for a margin of error. When you do this though, have a tank mounted right where you want it. I would also make sure you have no bends in the line where the oil has to go up and then back down.
You can go with less oil but keep in mind that less oil means more changes and less to lose if something happens to cause oil loss.

The extra 6 inches is not realy nessary but it would make the added line effect more drastic and easier to detect a problem and would allow you to set the oil tank on top of your frame, Giving max height that anyone would probably place it.

My experience with air cooled engines is that if you raise the oil capacity you lower the chance of over heating the engine.  More oil also means longer time between oil changes.  Can't see how you could go wrong by raising the oil tank since it is already mounted above the part of the engine that acts as a reservoir any way.

Go online and look at all the CB750 choppers with different oil tank configurations. They all work because the engine has a positive displacement pump.
