A tachometer. 69 CB 750. From what i've seen on eBay so far up to '72 may work. It needs to have The oil and neutral lights at the bottom and redline it 8000 RPM. Blue with white numbers, not green or black with green Numbers however this may just be 45-year-old faded black but it's blue that lights up green at night. Anyone seeing this animal?

You will have a hard time finding a tach for that year. 69 parts go for a mint, even in crappy shape.
To give you an idea, Vic World will sell a 100% sandcast cb750 for $42,000+.
Ebay might be the best bet and you may not be able to find the face color you want.
This is about what you are looking at and it is for a 71: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-CB-750-TACHOMETER-HONDA-K1-CB750-71-/161436109252?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item25965789c4&vxp=mtrYou might find others but I found a sandcast restore kit and it was over 200. Another was the guts of the tach, no housing and it was over 100.
If you have any motorcycle junkyards in your area, or even a hundred miles away, you may want to check it out.
As a rule, parts for 69, especially the rare true sandcast parts, will cost an arm and leg. You don't want to see the price for a wrinkle tank in decent shape. I have seen those listed at $1000 sometimes. Exhaust requires you to sell your first-born.
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

I have a K-1 here that belongs to a friend that has a big hole in the crankcase (thank you Harley shop), and he is thinking about parting it out. I just went out and looked at the gauges. They are not damaged, but the faces are faded. However new faces are available, and not that hard to install.

I thought about mentioning new faces but wasn't sure he would want to have to open the housing. I suppose sooner or later the housing needs to be opened anyways.
What did the hd shop do to cause the hole?

He had them put new brakes on the bike, and when they put it back together, they put the axle all the way forward. This left at least 8" of play in the chain. When my friend picked up the bike, he took off down the road getting on it. Then when he let off the throttle, all that play came around, and balled up on the countershaft sprocket. Since there was not enough room between the sprocket, and the case for all that chain, something had to give, and it was the case. However the Harley shop claims "he had to have picked up a rock."

Man, I would be avoiding that place like the plague. Even when riding dirt, I never "picked up a rock". Certainly not one large enough to hole a case.

when you say "sand cast" do you mean anything on that particular year bike? I was thinking that was just for the engine. and is the restore kit kind of like NOS ? or is it aftermarket? I would get a set of both and pay 200. if they matched and were descent.

no, that would be alright with me. Yes, I could open them up and change the faces as you suggest. I'd like to try to set the miles to reflect the actual miles on my machine if that is possible. ? I guess if you were trying to be unscrupulous it would be frowned on but I just want to have a accurate record. Can you let me know where your shop is located? I get around quite a bit as i'm a pilot , and if your in or around one of the major cities, or exotic locals, I probably stop there once in a while. Otherwise you could just text me images ?

The term "sandcast" does refer to the first 7,000+/- engines made. However there were some parts on the bike that were changed when the K-4 came out. Some of these parts were the front forks, brake, triple tree, rear fender, and taillight. There would not be anything wrong, or unscrupulous if you were to change the miles on a replacement speedometer, as long as you did not make them lower then actual miles on the machine, and then represent it as actual. As for where I am at, it is Kansas City.

Thanks. Can you email me pics of the instruments ? KC isn't too bad of a cross country for me if I needed to come up. Just west of Tulsa myself.

Talked to guy that owns the bike, and he has given the OK to parting it out. I will snap some pictures, and put them up on the forum here later.
