Polishing Engine Case Parts

Ed Bennett
I am in the process of restoring a 1979 CB750L (limited edition) that is already in particularly good shape, but would would like to refinish various engine covers.  Can anyone provide advice?

I will have the engine rebuilt this winter and when the engine is disassembled, I will take care of the various engine covers at that time.

I purchased a second CB750L to acquire certain parts in better condition and will be eventually offering that bike for sale.

Thanks, G'day,
Ed

Well there is a clear coat on the painted engine surfaces. For the fins and heavier parts, a good media blast is best to clean them off. No sand but plastic beads or maybe walnut shell style.
When you paint, use a vht paint(very high temp) and reapply a vht clear coat again.

As was stated a good blast is best,Quality in your finish all depends on the prep work totally ,use a good paint prep cleaner and don't handle them ,Oil on your finger tips can mess up a great finish, all that old clear has to come off those covers can be done very easily by wet sanding 200 to 400 you will be able to tell once levelness and smoothness once you start,be sure to get all oil off every were, can not be expressed enough.
Any V.H.T. over 500 deg. should be heated.Good luck be sure to post the finished goods..Piute...

I just use "Easy-off" oven cleaner, and a high pressure hose/car wash. The oven cleaner will eat every thing off! Even the paint if left on, for more then a few minuets.
