Possible fork seal leak fix?

jamman18
Just thinking about how AT fluid is one of the reccomended fluids to use in forks.  Wondering if Lucas makes a product for AT leaks as well and if that would work to swell the seals and stop the leaks?

You could give Cabreco's method a try if they are not too far gone.

I actually saw and tried that.....pretty sure I did it right with no results.  That's why I thought Lucas might work; just wondering if it is compatable.

Talked to Lucas whose chemist said that this product
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/accessories/Lucas-Oil-20-oz-automatic-transmission-fluid-conditioner/_/N-2609?itemIdentifier=592485_0_0_

used  at 10% capacity of each fork would do the trick.  Can anyone confirm the capacity of each fork on 1977 750 ss?  Looks like 7oz. in each side if I'm reading the manual right.

It is 7 oz. if you completely drain and pump the forks, what is considered a dry fill. If you just pop the drain plugs, let it drain til done dripping and put the plugs back in,then most people just refill with 5.5-6 oz.

The manual should have the amounts needed for a dry fill and a drain and fill. Be best to read that than to trust me

Yes, the manual says 6-6.5 oz refill.  I was checking out what it looked like inside when taking a fill plug off the top of the fork and about had a heart attack as the fill plug sprang off!  The manual says nothing about the spring that is held under tension by the plug!  Finally figured out a way to push down and turn at the same time to tighten down again.  Sweatin' bullets for a minute!

Try being a tard and open both caps and then try to get the spring in and the cap on the first fork! I didn't think ahead on that one! It wasn't the easiest to put back on...

One thing to keep in mind. The fluid might swell the seals but that might cause more "sticktion" as it is know. Making small bumps more harsh.

The way that reads makes it sound like it's bad to change fluid with the comment about swelling and "sticktion"

Well these older forks suffered from this. It is caused by the seals, so if you swell them, it MAY be worse.I can't say 100% though. But if your seals are dying, replacement would be best. Seals are about 10 clams. The work would take about 2 hours if you took your time.

The oil treatment/stop leak stuff it most likely very thick. I wonder how that would affect the forks as far as the action of the suspension? It could possibly give you a very stiff ride. Possibly even blow out a fork seal???

Haha, done that, this is where you decide whether to hoist the front of the frame or put a jack under the engine or spend a couple of beers and call your friends.

I tried the fix with the film strip and I think it worked!  Still am planning on changing seals but I noticed the snap rings don't look like a "C" with 2 holes on the ends but instead look round with curved indentations across from each other on each side of the stanchion tube.  What kind of tool removes these so one can remove the old seals?

Honda used a few different types of snap rings. A pair of pliers, and a screwdriver should remove the kind, you have.
