Rear Brake Cable needs to be installed... completely clueless noob

Ugliestcb
I am purchasing a 1974 Honda CB750 next sunday and the guy is saying that the only thing that needs to be done to it is that the brake cable needs to be installed. I asked my resident "Vintage Honda Expert" (Andrew) about this little issue, and he said that it was not hard at all and that it "Just needs new brake fluid." i have searched through the Googles and this forum as well as some others, and couldn't find any write ups or pictures. I just want to make sure that the Ugliest Cb750 ever is going to be ready by the time the nice days in Illinois hit.

so... my question is:
Is it really easy?
How do I do it?
and
What am I going to need in order to complete this little project?

Oh, this is the biketotally awesome, right? it's going to get a new seat and a real paint job. don't worry.

on a completely different note, the guy selling it believes that the seat pan is the stock one. Am I correct in believing that it isn't and that the seat is going to have the King/Queen seat pan?

On the home page of this site, you will find a thread with a link to the Factory Service Manual (FSM) -- download it.  [Oops!  I was thinking of the clutch cable...  Sorry.]
I am not sure about the King/Queen seat pan.  If you are looking for a stock seat and pan, check e-Bay, local bike junkyards, and your local CL listings.  The King/Queen seat should be easy to sell on e-Bay, this site, and others.  There is always CL if you do not wish to mess with S/H.  You could also make a custom seat pan, using fiberglass, and have a custom seat made for it.  There was a posting on this site, recently, showing how to make a custom pan with fiberglass.  If you search the Internet, you can also find instructions, as well.  Cheers!

Welcome to the forum. Your bike has had the rear wheel changed to a Comstar off a later DOHC bike. I would say a C model. It has a drum break, and should have a rod to operate it. Your front is the stock disc break, and might need the fluid changed, or the caliper/master cylinder rebuilt. Neither break has a cable. On the seat pan, if, you put up a picture of the underneath side, I would be able to tell, you if it is stock. However even if it is after market it should be pretty flat, since the humps are made with foam.

I asked the guy what type of bike the rear wheel was off of, and he said it's off an '81 honda. He keeps saying that the cable is for the rear brake though. I asked him if he meant that the cable was for the rear brake Light, and he said, "No, it's for the rear brake." I trust what you guys are saying more than the guy with the bike. although he said that the bike does stop with the rear brake... so I don't understand the point of this mysterious cable.

That's a new one on me also. There are some bikes that do have a cable operated rear break, but not yours. Your wheel looks to be a 16 inch wheel. If, so then it would be off a "C" model. Maybe if, you took some pictures of the break hardware, we could tell if it is correct, or messed up.

I haven't purchased it yet. I am just looking to make sure that I don't get screwed into purchasing something that works, but isn't correct... Like I said, I am a completely clueless noob. I'll just ask him what the cable does, and we can dedeuce this issue further once my question is answered by the seller.

The guy said that the cable is for the back brake to stop. I might be wrong, but if the rear brake on an '82 Honda is stopped by a shaft, then how the hell does a cable stop the rear brake?

Looking at the picture you posted,it is a rear drum bike and I can make out the brake rod in the pic. So it should be all complete. The only thing involving "cable" and "stop" that i can think of is the rear brake pedal has a spring ( someone may have used some sort of cable) that hooks to it that activates the brake,or stop ,light. The switch has a group of wires coming out of it that he may be calling a cable???Hard to say. But there should not be any cables on the rear brake at all.

BUT,it's not that big of a deal. If you get the bike and have to replace the rear brake rod it is easily available and cheap. Heck,I got a spare lying around i'll never use. See if you can get some pics, that would help alot. But if you cant,it is not a real big issue to sort out. I wouldn't pass up a good deal on a good running bike over whatever is going on with the rear brakes. JMO
