Rear Brake Stuck

jbrightwell
1981 CB750K - I pulled the rear wheel because the brake would not engage.  The shoes are shot but the fitting that turns in the hub to engage the shoes to the drum is stuck tight.  Been soaking it for 2 days but just wont move.  Should I try and heat that?  It is kind of brassy gold in color and I wouldnt want to damage anything.  Just as soon not buy a new hub but... Suggestions?   Thanks everyone!!

I'm not up on the DOHC's so ill assume they are the same as my SOHC 's. The actuator is steel and the bushing IR rides in is brass or bronze. Not sure which. A little heat couldn't hurt but I don't know how much the bushing.can take. Nothing to lose at this point I suppose,so go for it I guess. Hope this helps somehow

A picture or two might help  Did it work before or did it get stuck while you were using it.

Sorry I did not catch your post sooner. I have been very busy with College, and finals are coming up this week. To your problem, try heating it up. A little heat will do wonders.

The bike has sat for 4-5 years and it was stuck when I got it.  I actually thought the pedal was binding when I first tried it, but when I got that off it led me to the spindle.

Thanks all.  We put it in a vise and two of us tried to turn it.  We turned the vise!  Got some super penetrant on there now.  If that doesnt work its time to turn up the HEAT!  So if Im thinking right, that complete spindle will come out of there?

Yes that is exactly it.  I see some on ebay for around 20 bucks so even if I open up a can of whoop ass on it I can always get a new hub.  The bike shows no sign of being under water but man is it stuck!

You could try pressing it out.Several things can happen......it comes out,it comes out with the bushing or the hub breaks.

Or soak with some PB Blaster and then try rotating it.

My son took his apart last week on a 1978 Honda and he said there was a felt seal in there around the shaft. I guess it serves as a dust seal. May be different on your model.  My thoughts in this order: Apply penetrating oil, apply torque and impact, press, apply heat, replace.  Good luck.

Dump it in a bucket of cleaner. It did wonders for me.

I used waterproof grease on the brake cam shaft. I don't expect it to ever freeze up again.
