Reinstall of gear shifter cover

Indyjoel
Hi all

I had to remove and replace the gear shifter case as I had to drill most of the bolts out and managed to crack the case

I went to look for new stainless bolt but could not find the exact lengths as shown in the honda manual. For example I could only find a 35 mm instead of a 40mm and a 45mm instead of the 50mm.

Do you think the shortage of length could be a problem?

Also when I put a new cover on is there a gasket or special glue I need to put on the cover before I put it back on the bike?

Thanks in advance

Had to drill most of the screws? WOW unheard of.

You must not have an impact driver, or you are using it incorrectly.

When replacing the bolts, use the longer ones. There are several company's that offer stainless steel bolt sets for these bikes. Z1enterprises has them. On the cover, yes it should have a gasket. If it is a good gasket it will not need an adhesive. However if you do use an adhesive do NOT use RTV Silicone!!! And only apply the sealer to the cover, and not the engine side.

Pretty common IMO. I've had to drill about 1/2 of mine out after the impact driver chews the heads off. Those old screws are junk.

Back on topic...Listen to Tools. These engine dont tolerate silicone at all. Most likely your gasket will seal fine installing it dry. These cases are machined quite nicely.

The allen head screw sets are nice, but what about the hex head screws like the DOHC bikes use? Anybody ever see those available for a SOHC? That'd be awesome.

It drove me nuts. The first two was good and then bam. I stuffed the heads with my impact driver even being hit with a mallet.

I still need to remove the parts that are stuck in the case still. That will be treated to lots and lots of wd40 first and then super gently pried out. I don't want to have to drill them out or worse....

I will check microfiches for the gaskets.

The wd-40 is good for cleaning and smells good, But P.B. blast is much better.
