Removing pressed in Pilot Jets from Keyhole carbs

TOOLS1
Administrator
Here are the TOOLS needed. A 4-40 Tap, 4-40X1 1/2 inch screw with washer, and nut, A 1 inch long piece of 5/16 ID tube (I use a piece of an old break line.)

This is what the pilot jets look like.

Tap into the end of the jet. You want to Tap in about 3/8 inch, so that the screw will get at least 3 full turns of thread. Sometimes the jet will come out while tapping it. The few threads in the end of the jet WILL NOT HURT IT.

Slide the tube over the jet, and screw in the screw with the nut, and washer above the tube. Then tighten the nut down to pull out the jet.

Here it is after removing.

You can just grab them with the pliers and pull, giving a half twist.

A miniature vice grips works very well too, and then you do not ruin the jet.
No metal filings inside the carb to get stuck.

Too many jets have been bent, and carbs cracked by twisting them out with pliers. Also the threads DO NOT HURT the jets in any way, and if you are removing the jets, you are most likely cleaning the carbs.

I'm sure the pliers method can be used with success. But this straight pull method seems much safer IMO.

Just tap them back in with the handle of a screw driver.

The pull method is ok and the twist. It is when people wiggle them side to side that things get messed up. I guess I have never seen a bent jet but I have seen cracked jet housings from wiggling them.

Your method is perfectly fine though, I doubt the threads bother anything since they do not change the venturi effect of the jet.
