There is only a 1/4 inch difference in the length. You can make that work.Right?

1/4 inch difference in what? I can not understand $1,000.00, for a reproduction gas tank. e-bay is filled with good originals. I even have one in very good shape under the work bench. Just need to find a bike to put it on.

I guess if one were doing a 99 points restoration, one might pay that much. I wouldn't: I'm too cheap, and I can only imagine the anguish of putting a dent in a $1000 gas tank.

But hey...whatever fills your carb float bowls.

Would fiberglass hold up as a gas tank? I was considering that,but wasn't sure if it would hold up.

Fiberglass works pretty good. for a gas tank. However with all the ethanol in gas today, I would line the tank with a product like Kreem. I do have a tank that would be perfect, for a cafe style. It's off an 81 GS 750.

I even have the matching tail section.

Hmmm...wonder how much it would take to mount that on my frame? I hate to not use what i got,i hate to see parts go to waste.But i also don't wanna spend 1000 hours restoring junk.I might have to jump on that.Thanks Tools.

Its not about making it work. it is about the looks. My personal preference is that the early tanks are ugly. I prefer the 77/78 tanks.
Also, some of the early tanks have the bungs on the right while mine is on the left. Routing gas like that is not always trouble free.

I've patched A lot of car/truck gas tank in Wisconsin not one has leaked that I no .ran with a glass tank before but it was lined with ?,So TOOLS idea with kreem would not hurt, ...Piute N Judose...

I like the looks of the ss tank,but mine has been lined once already.Dont know if it was kreem or some other sealer.So.being sealed once and the amount of rust in there now(not to mention rust-thru)i dont know if it will clean up with acid or not.Probably what i'll do is cut mine into with the plasma,sand blast the innards and weld it back together. I got another tank i want to use the flip top filler off of,but hate to cut up a real nice tank. Fooling with old cars has made me appreciate the rarity of certain things and,though i am not into restorations,i hate to ruin good surviving parts. I may just go with 'glass and make life easy,but its not as easy as it sounds getting bungs on a 'glass tank for plumbing and such. If i could find a healthy ss tank i would use it as is.No knee inserts or flip top.No suck luck as of yet.Well,probably knee inserts...i lied.Oh well,guess i oughta really get get it running good first.

  ..think I'm going to get another tank (after mine is running great)80-81 and put one of those flip caps on,dent the heckk out of it ,knee dents, just fo $h!^s N giggles,and looking kool..going to have a need for another tank for when I send all out (Winter) to be painted any how...piute..

Shiny, have you tried this:  Empty all the gas, put in some sharp edged nuts and bolts and such (about 1/4 or 1/3 full), seal up all the openings, and agitate by hand for a few minutes.  Alternatively, you could do the above, put it in a box with some foam rubber to cushion it, and put it in a clothes dryer ON THE AIR ONLY SETTING.  10-15 minutes should be plenty to knock off anything on the inside.

Unless you feel more comfortable taking a plasma cutter to the tank and re-welding it...

Hello Luke. I haven't tried anything on this tank or ever cleaned any other tank out before. I have been taking suggestions only. One friend told me to do the nuts and bolts,like you,but to also use muriatic acid along with then.Bad idea or good? I'm sure you idea is a lot more...reasonable than cutting and welding.But I am a bit of a perfectionist,and know it will drive me nuts if i cannot see all shiny metal inside that tank. But no, i am not real excited about the work involved in splitting that tank open either. Welding is in order,regardless,due to the rust-thru. It's rusted all along the kick stand side,I suppose from leaning that direction. So do you suggest acid, or some other cleaner,or just shake it up dry? Diesel fuel,perhaps? What about the existing sealer inside? Do you think it will come out with just shaking it? Anyway,here is what i got.You can only see a portion,but rust extends front to rear. I know...crappy cell phone image...i need a good camera.  And Piute...knee dents and flip tops are just coolYou have style,my friend

Oh yeah.Electrolysis works great.Havent tried it on this tank yet.Didn't know how good it would work with sealer being in there

Normally I would get a used tank and clean it and seal it and fix the
dents and repaint the tank but
you cannot get fuel proof paint in a spray can anymore.
You can get 2 part clear in a spray can from Eastwood.
I just do not know what the two part paint is compatible with.

All of these HONDA CB750 tanks that are 33 years old are getting in such
bad shape they are no longer repairable.

You can get NEW metal side covers from Carpy's website for $100 each.

As far as The reproduction gas tank, it is new metal ,painted correctly,
and just painting a gas tank can be expensive now.
$1000, is a lot of money, but it will raise the value of a restored bike.

When I have built a chopper I bought a new aftermarket tank.
Then it has to be lined. $40. +
Buy a fuel valve.
Buy a gas cap.
Then it has to be primed and painted and sanded and then clear coated.

A lot of work can go into a gas tank.
