Ring gap clearance????

mallen14
I'm checking gaps on all my piston rings and idk what they should be. The manual says standard gap is .1-.3 mm but service limit is .5mm Does this mean as long as its under .5mm they are good?? Cause they are right about .4mm, is that ok or do I need a set of rings?

the .1-.3 is when new. Service limit means after that needs to be replaced. You're under, so you should be fine.
Turbos, Hondas, 4-bangers, what could go wrong?

Don't line up the gap's. Space them out.

Gotcha. Thanks.

So far I've checked two pistons/cylinders and have less than .5mm clearance on both rings. Will check the other two tonight when I get home but if they also are within specs I should be good to reuse them correct? I only ask it like this because when I did a compression test that showed low compression, then put a little oil in the cylinder I got really good compression. From those results I assumed I had bad rings so took the head off and redid the valves which none were seating right. So if the rings are in spec it had to just be the valves not sealing right??

If it were me I would go ahead and hone the cyl and put a new set of rings on it.  Seems like money well spent sence you already have it tore down

That's what I was thinking but just having trouble making myself spend more money on this build. Plus I am really impatient and hate waiting on parts to get here

But in the long run it might be worth it

Ha your probably right because even though I got my valves set up right I was still kinda uneasy about those rings. Now a honing tool. Think I saw them at autozone for about $20 but how are is it to hone the cylinders??

It's not hard. Just chuck the hone in a drill, stick it in the cylinder, spin it, and go up, and down. Use gas to lubricate the hone. This will leave a really nice cross hatch.
