Rising from sleep

jeepithard
Hey guys I just reacquired the tank to my Father's 1970 740. It has sat since 1988 but it has always been inside and there's been no gastank on it for about 11 years. I have the tank, and it ran when it was put away. I obviously know it isn't going to fire right up. I'm good with mechanics but I'm new to bikes. I don't know too much. Is there anything  ishould know before i go for this? Like I know I should maybe take the carbs off and ateast give 'em a squirt of WD or something. And possibly the cylinder walls? Any ideas would be great!

Well download the manual here and then run through the tune up procedure.
Change the oil. Open up the carbs and spray them out with some carb cleaner and remove the jets and check for crud. You need to be able to see through all the holes.
You are basically doing a clean up on it and yearly maintenance.
Make sure cables move freely.

Now, your rubber bits will be hard, so be prepared to replace some of that stuff but they should hold long enough to at least start the bike.
DO not ride it though. Those tires will be rock hard and have no grip.

Welcome and post pics when/if you can!
The ride IS the adventure. The destination is just to get gas!

yea  you will wanna pull the plugs  get new ones
 ngk d8ea
when ready to  fire up  put a very little bit of gas in each cylinder

charge a battery do not jump start it that will fry the rectifier and the regulator

check your clutch and your throttle and your brakes front and rear
do not mess with the gear shift yet  change the oil  and filter

pull the carb bowls   clean those out   and then put them back on

make you a cheater tank so that you can put gas in the tank  and still see and get to the carbs to check the sync    basically have a tank with out the tank being in the way

most importantly  make  sure you do not ever jump it with a car battery   or you may cause some electrical problems that you may not have
check all fuses  hmm thats about it  pics lots of  pics hell video is better

A car battery is ok as it will only pull what it needs, it is a running car you do not want to jump from.
