Rotor Removal

80 750
Hi folks,
I am working on my cb750k an am trying to remove the generator's rotor from the crank shaft before splitting the case. I don't have the special Honda removal tool and I have been trying to use the rear axel, which is supposed to do in the absence of the special tool. I have threaded in the axel but I have cranked it about as far as I am willing to at this point. Still the rotor has not budged.
Any ideas about how to get it off?
Not to mention, any ideas about how to get it back on during reassembly?
Thanks.

While taking off the rotor (and other things) for engine disassembly, it was stuck on there pretty well.  This was using the Honda removal tool (or its equivalent).  We found some PB Blaster, and that got in there and freed things up very well.  Popped right off after that.

It may be worth it to borrow/rent the tool from your local Honda MC mechanic.  I recommend the PB Blaster method.  Worked for me.

Finally got the special tool, which wasn't as expensive as I thought it was going to be, got a long lever and cranked the heck out of it while a friend put all of his body weight on the engine. It popped off. I did apply the PB Blaster and some heat too. Thanks for the tip.

Glad to hear it!  Lessons learned and passed on are the greatest thing.
I don't know what's in PB Blaster, but that stuff is just amazing for freeing up stuck stuff.

Double check the parts you heated up, in case something got warped.

The way I learned to take the rotor off was from the 750C site.  You tighten the spare axle in by hand, hit the end with a BFH a couple of times, turn the axle in a little more by hand, wack it a few more times, and pretty soon the rotor just drops off on your foot.

Initially I was somewhat worried about it damaging the crank, or bearings, but all the greybeards over there had been doing it for years with no issues.  Just cranking on the axle risks pulling the threads out of the rotor.

I expect that would work, but I didn't want to try it.  Anything involving repeated whacks with a large hammer probably conflicts with seals and close tolerances and stuff.  My mechanic had the right tools and the PB blaster, so it worked just fine.

I don't think we had a spare axle, either.

Thanks for the input.

Hey, my rotor bolt absolutely will not budge. I have PB blastered and rapped on it, put the bike in 5th gear and applied the rear brake but when I pull on the bolt it will not come off and the clutch will actually slip. It is threaded normally, right? (counter-clockwise to loosen)

any other tips or tricks?
