STARVING FOR GAS

KIRK
I JUST GOT MY 1981 CB 750 K ON THE ROAD.
I BOUGHT IT THIS WINTER.
IT SEEMS TO BE STARVING FOR GAS WHEN YOU GIVE IT GAS
START GREAT .
I PUT POD AIR CLEANERS ON IT , COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM ?

Could be. I'm not too up on the DOHC's but I do know that exhaust ant filter modifications on the SOHC bikes usually require adjusting and frequently rejetting.

As buttcan said previously,
Pods can most certainly do this. Problem is the carbs work best with a certain amount of vacuum.
The early(69-76) sohc required a lot of jetting work some times to work right, the 77/78 not so much usually.
If you have the airbox, put it on and see if it clears up.
Maybe someone with a bit more info on the dohc can chime in with some more concrete info.

Yes, it takes A LOT of work to get pods working right with the DOHC CV carbs.  Not worth it.  Different carbs + Pods = OK.  Stock airbox and paper filer is best.

How do the k&n or uni foam filters in the airbox work on the dohc?

does the pods have to much air flow , and would it work to put foam in the pods to restrict air ?
and when you talk about jetting do you mean drill out the main jet bigger, and how much bigger ?

Yes, too much air flow which cuts down on the vacuum needed to draw fuel. Which is why larger jets are sometimes required.
I would hesitate to drill the jets though as the inside of a jet is shaped sorta like an hourglass to give a venturi effect. You drill it out and it cant do that. Newer jets would be better.

As for packing them with foam, you would have to be careful that the foam does not crumble and get into the engine. I would probably just suggest using k&n pods if pods are a must.

These carbs just plain need the 'vacuum' of the box attached to them to get the slides to work.  When you twist the throttle you aren't moving the slides on these.  Foam in the pods might help...Never seen it done.  Have seen people say they gets pods working right, but there is A LOT done to the carbs.  Full-rejetting (never drill a jet), slide trimming, spring cutting, etc.  I'm still skeptical that they get true WOT when done.  K&N Filter in the box will be better, but still not as good as going  back to a stock paper filter.  Snag a set of used CR's/etc and the pods will work great, and you'll actually get a performance upgrade while you're at it.  However, if you don't mess with the stock setup they just plain run great....They have an accel pump/etc.  In most areas a primary main jet change (one or two richer) will help eliminate a common small flat spot in the midrange.  Ma EPA had these things coming lean on this jet from the factory.

Hey kirk, if your gas cap does not vent good there will be hardly any gas
getting through your petcock and filter, make sure your gas cap vent is not plugged up, mine did the same thing, now it runs like a bat out of hell,,good luck, mykee440
