Should I get a 1980 Honda CB750 Custom

Ras
I'm thinking about getting my first motorcycle, and a 1980 Honda CB750 Custom has caught my eye. Wanting to know what to look for to make sure I don't end up with a lemon. Also, what level of mechanical expertise will I need to keep it running if this beomes my first bike?

Thank you

Welcome to the forum. Other then checking the tires, breaks, oil, the only problem that year bike is prone to is the charging system. If, you know how to use an ohm/volt meter take it, and check the voltage.

If it's been parked a long time with fuel in it, the carburetors are likely to need cleaning. Symptoms would include; hard to start, flooding, fuel leaking, engine won't idle, engine wont rev up quickly, engine runs better with the choke on even after it has warmed up.

Read through the procedures in the shop manual, which is available for download from this forum, for removing and disassembling the carburetors, to see if it is something you might be able to accomplish with the mechanical experience and tools you have available. Also look through the chapter on the charging system to get some ideas on what might be required to make any repairs.

There are  plenty of nice people on this forum that are more than happy to help out with advice and tips so don't be afraid if you don't think you have the experience to work on it.

Thanks guys! I really appreciate your feedback. Seller is telling me the bike has new tires, new battery, new chain and sprocket. Bike looks great in pictures and have less than 19,000 miles on it. Think I'll make the leap and make an offer.

Thanks again /Ras
