Should I take my wheel apart for paint?

joshscustoms
I'm getting ready to paint my wire wheels.  I want to paint the rim portion black and leave my spokes chrome.  Do you think that its a bad idea for me to take the wheels apart?  I'm really good mechanically but this would be the first time I try something like that.  Do you know of any tutorials online or anything like that?  where can I get new spokes?

You will want to remove the spokes. First, measure the hub in relation to each side of the rim. Photo the spokes closely to record the spoke pattern. From there, remove them and do your thing. New spokes may be purchased from the dealer depending on your bike otherwise there are many online stores such as bikebandit.com or partsnmore.com.

Yes you should if you are a confident in your own ability type of person.
I have just completed the rebuilding of my front wheel and am halfway through the back.
Get as much info as you can and take pictures.
There are two sizes of spoke per wheel on my 750 which is a 1977 model Super Sport.
The only wheels I had done before this were on my BSA Thunderbolt 1070 model and they are fine.
There is a lot of information on the internet to help you but the main thing I found was take your time and tighten the spokes evenly a bit at a time. When you think you have got the wheel as true as possible hit each spoke to get the same pitch as a wind glass being hit with a spoon to ensure these are tight as its your life you are putting on the line if they are not. If in doubt leave it to someone else.
Best of luck  Bob

As silver said, match up your spokes. The bends on them are different. It is not foolproof but if you try to put a wrong one on, you will usually know pretty quick.
