First, because you tried to start it with gas (a highly flammable liquid) running freely into your electrics. Second, because it was you that hit the starter button when gas (a highly flammable liquid) was freely running onto your electrics. Third, because right after you turned the petcock on, it allowed gas to run from the tank into the carbs, where your needle valve was not sealing, allowing gas (a highly flammable liquid) to overflow into the carb and overwhelm the overflow, and then needing somewhere to go, ran out the rear of the carb where your velocity stack was mounted. Fourth, the accelerator pump would not have anything to do with this condition.

What you need to know is, if gas is running out of the bike anywhere, YOU NEED TO FIX IT! Even if it is a small drip coming out the overflow tubes. A lot of people think that if the engine is running, it will stop leaking WRONG!!! If it is leaking with the engine not running, it is still going to be leaking with the engine running.

You will need to give the carbs a good going through, maybe replacing the needle valves, and floats.

Glad that you were not hurt, and was able to put it out before burning anything more then a few wires.
