...and there's precious little out there for this 1984 Honda Shadow. So, thinking it over, my wife would probably never ride 2-up with me, and there have been occasions where I need to bring stuff home from a store or whatnot.
So I decided to make one. Here's how I did it:
1. Remove the side bars, sissy bar (not the stock model, too tall for my liking), and the passenger seat.
2. I had a luggage trunk from when I bought my wife her Honda Metropolitan, so all I needed was a framework to bolt it to. I used aluminum bar stock 1/8" x 3/4", and found to make it 13" x 8" I'd need a 4 foot piece. I used 2 blocks of wood and a C-clamp to make the bends. I have no welder, so I overlapped the end pieces and added a brace to tie the front of the rack to the seat mounting bolt. For the rear/sides, I used braces to tie from the turn signal bolts to the side of the rack. I tied some threaded aluminum rod across the rear connect points, and may add another one near the front.
After everything was tightened down and solid, I mounted the base plate and the trunk.
So far, so good. I've put 2 gallons of milk in the trunk (almost 20 lbs), and it hasn't wiggled or moved. It does feel a bit top heavy with stuff in the trunk, but I'll get used to it.
Total cost of the materials was about $30, including hardware to mount the plate. Not too bad for a homebuilt job. I can remove the trunk if I need to bungee something bigger to the rack.
I hope this helps. Let me know what you think. Yes, I know it's not a CB750, but maybe someone will take this idea and run with it.
