Parts are on order. From the dealer man: crank bearings, rod bearings, 2 exhaust valves, 2 valve seals, 2 valve guides, 4 sets of piston rings, oil seal kit, and full gasket set. Total price including employee discount: $520. Not bad, considering. I was lucky to find the cam chains, tensioners, and guides used at Rice Paddy.
My mechanic should have the parts tomorrow afternoon, and if all goes well, the bike should be running in 7-10 days. I'll be traveling, so I won't be able to help him. Updates to follow.

If it was about the money I don't think any one of us would do this. Sometimes there are no other options. I get asked why I am dumping money in mine. For one, I got the frame and donor bike for $350.00 combined which is so far way cheaper than a ready to go bike. I don't have the money for a new one straight out so I can do a little at a time. And NO ONE will ever know this bike the way I do.
You spend whatever you want, it's your right and IMHO, your duty to keep a classic on the road.
RIDE ON!

Thanks for the encouragement. I guess there are worse things I could put my money into. Even if I were to quit with the motor torn down, I'd still have to pay the mechanic for his labor, so at this point I'm committed. Like I mentioned before, I have to look at the end of the process and not the steps inbetween.
What keeps me motivated is how well it'll run after the rebuild. It was pretty good on 3-3.5 cylinders, and I'm itching to find out how it'll go on 4 healthy and synchronized cylinders. Also, it'll help me and my son when we tear down his even older cb550f and fix it up. See? It's paying off big dividends already. ![](/images/smiley/anim_handshake.gif) Luke M

That's all that matters. I think all bikes should be preserved. I have my favoirtes as do others but what I like about them is they are more personal than cars. And trust, there ARE worse things you could spend it on.

Back on 2 wheels (1979 CB750L, 34K miles, all stock) after a 30+ year break.
It's still fun, and just as scary as before. I like it.

Here's a couple of interesting pictures. It seems the chain was a problem for quite a while, wiggling back and forth against the chain tunnel in the cylinder piece. I can only guess the adjuster for the chain either wasn't working or was loose for some time. I figured I wouldn't be this deep into the engine ever again (he said with hope in his voice), so I'd take some pics.

An update on the Avenger: my work has ramped up significantly, and I have had no time to work on the bike. My mechanic has also been swamped with projects, and has put my bike on the back burner for the last couple of weeks. He's cleared out his backlog, and will get going on mine very soon. He's a little slow, but he's careful and diligent. I'm still hoping to get some riding in before the really cold weather hits. I know, I know...real bikers ride year round. ![](/images/smiley/smiley_good.gif) Luke M

not here they don't ![](/images/smiley/smiley_unhappy.gif) I'm crying with you . . . mine's out of commission . . . hopefully not too out though. stalled and wouldn't re-start [raining yesterday, not enough juice to even turn over twice]. electrical? alternator? battery? starting simple and working to "oh-oh" . . . messy weather here for the rest of the week [they say] so in no rush . . . and a longer warmer fall expected so here's hoping.

Got an update from the mechanic. He took Plastigage to the main and rod bearings on the crank, and everything is up to spec. He said the oil holes on the crankshaft were a little rough, so he took it to his favorite machine shop to have them chamfer the oil holes. This should improve oil flow, and help it spin smoother. $50. Sadly, I'll be traveling for the next 2 weeks, so it's on him to put it all back together. All I can do now is wait. ![](/images/smiley/smiley_whistling.gif) Luke M
