Speedo not reading right

Argent
I just bought a 1980 CB750 custom, I'm very excited about it.

The speedo doesn't read properly, it moves up very sluggish and I don't know if its accurate when it tops out.

I *think* I'm moving 45, and after about 30-45 seconds it will register 45.  But this bike is larger and heavier than anything I've had before so my feel for the speed may be off.

Anyway, what would be the best way to start fixing this?  Can I replace the gauge without the entire cluster?  Maybe just the cable?  Is there a Honda speed cable lubrication hole I just don't know about?

  Thanks for any help!

Very likely it's a dirty cable.

The cable is two pieces. The outer sheath that you see and a cable/wire inside that drives the speedo.Once removed, the inner wire just slips right out. Get it cleaned up and slide it back in the sheath will a little lube. Oil won't do, as it will will just drain off eventually. A thin smear of thin grease will do the trick. You may have to clean the inside of the sheath if it's real bad, but most of the time it's not.

You may have a damaged speedo drive, but most likely it's just a dirty cable.
