I noticed that oil was leaking from my valve cover and I went to tighten the bolt and it would just turn.
Turns out that the threaded hole on the exhaust camshaft cap is threadless. How can I repair this without replacing the cam cap?

Ok, I got the helicoil for my 6-1mm bolt.
I seen that the kit needs a 1/4 inch drill bit. I don't know what size tap I need. I used a 7mm-1 to tap a piece of metal to make sure it works. the helicoil didn't thread into it. Does anyone know what size tap bit I need?

The kit should come with a special tap for the heli-coil thread.

I only got the helicoils. So the kit comes with a special tap and I cant buy a tap that will work?

I got it fixed.
I used a piece of metal I had as practice. I drilled out the hole with a 17/64 drill bit and tapped with a 5/16-24 and inserted 6-1mm helicoil inserts. I screwed in a bolt and it went in like normal and I tightened it down and torqued it down a good amount and it held.
So I did the same thing with the cam cap but I put 2 helicoils instead of 1 and it worked. I wouldn't do this with a bolt that required high torque unless I had the kit for it but this worked for lighter torqueing use.

So I know this is an old thread but I have the same problem. One of the threads are stripped on a cam holder. It's the very front left one on a 1980 DOHC cb750.
Can anyone recommend a helicoil kit to use for this repair? Will this one work http://www.amazon.com/StarSide-Helicoil-Thread-Repair-Recoil/dp/B018TRQO4G

That one should do just fine. However I would like to point out that you rarely need to drill the hole larger when doing the M6X1.00 helicoil in aluminum. I just take the tap and go to it.

Awesome thank you and great tip! I was going to use a drill press but it sound like that's not necessary. Someone shoved a standard, slightly larger bolt in there. I ordered the proper bolt, replacement seals, and new cam cover gasket. Should be good as new soon.

These things are famous for stripping. Nothing more irritating than getting this fixed, cleaning everything up, finaggling the valve cover back on to position with it's fiddly gasket.... and then you strip another buttoning things up.
I'd consider going ahead and heli-coil'ing all of the cam caps while you're already inside. They really are soft.

You're probably right. It's a lot easier with the cams out. I should do it now. Thinking about metal from the tap getting into the engine stresses me out.
