I finally got a salvage title for my 1980 CB 750F, and can feel safe about putting some money into it. So I'm tearing into the motor, and I'm running into steps on which the shop manual and Clymer manual are rather vague. For instance, the manual says "Inspect the cam chain guide and chain tensioner for damage or excessive wear." This is my first rebuild, so I have no idea how these are supposed to look - how do you know what "excessive wear" is if there are no specs?
When looking at valve lifters, bearing journals, etc. it says to inspect for "scoring, scratches or evidence of insufficient lubrication." Again, what is significant. I can see scratches/wear, but can't feel them with my finger. Do I assume everything is OK if the specs are within tolerance?
The manuals says "Remove the valve stem seals," but don't say how. I don't want to damage the valve stem guides but accidentally scraping them with my needle-nose, but trying to grab the outside of the seals doesn't seem to be too easy. I've removed several by tearing the rubber apart, but I wonder if there is an easier way.
You advice is greatly appreciated.
