Switched to Dyna S electronic ignition

CB70
My bike was running great so I decided to fine tune it and got the Dyna S electronic ignition. It's installed properly and timing is good. The problem is ever since I switched to the Dyna the idling is inconsistent and the pipes pop. There's a little jerking when riding. When it's revved it takes a while for it to come back down to idle. What I've checked:
1. No Vacum leak
2. Mixture screws adjusted
3. Valves properly gapped
4. Floats & Jets are clear and not sticking
The electronic ignition is hot to the touch, is that normal or should it just be warm. I'm going to check if there's gas in the oil. The odd thing is it was running fine, I can't see it being anything except the electronic ignition unless something just coincidently went wrong. Anyone had installed one of these on their bike and had the same problems? Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

I can't help much but I put mine on like 8 years ago and it ran like a champ ever since. I mean, it was good before but starting was virtually instantaneous. Warm ups were faster, and mpg rose a bit. On the highway at 65 mph, I can get over 50 mpg.

I have 2 guesses for you. One is the ignition is magnetically triggered. The pickups are too far from the trigger, just slightly. You should be able to adjust this a bit. Second, pull the plugs and see if the insulator is white. Your symptoms are like a lean mix. The plugs will fire hotter with the dyna on account of the coils saturating more than they did with the points. A retune of the idle screws should take care of that. Remember, out is richer, in is leaner. On the cylinders that the plugs may be white, turn out the mix screw an 8th of a turn to start with, might be all you need.

Thanks Run-run, I richen up the plugs and still didn't do it. I also moved the pickups. I'm just wondering if it's my coils, the Dyna is hot. I'm wondering if I need to switch to 5 ohm, I hope not. How can I tell if maybe I got a bad one? I've heard this has been happening.

Make sure you have everything DYNA recommends for their ignition. Proper ohm coils and plug caps are important. Also, when using the proper resistor caps be sure to use solid core wire. Suppression core wire is no-no.

Yeah, the cyna is meant to be used with 5 ohm coils. As he installed the Dyna S, I assume he had points so if everything is stock, then the coils are 5 ohm with copper ht wire. Plug caps seem standard at 5k ohms.

As for the dyna being warm, it is next to a hot engine. So it will get warm. How warm I don't know. If I had concerns, I would contact dyna and find out the heat range and then use laser temp meter and check it.

What color are the plugs? A test you can try would be to pull the choke knob partway out and see if the symptoms go away. If they do, then more tuning is needed. If not, it is likely somewhere else.

As a final last resort, while I and many others have had luck with the S, if it just won't work try to get it returned as faulty. Then get the Pamco ignition. Not as well known but they have been around for years and are a very good system. It is what I would get now if I needed a new unit.
