Tire advise CB750 1991

Koen326
Hi everyone,

At this moment i'm searching for new tires for mij CB750 1991. At this moment i've the following tires:
front: Dunlop Radial D220F ST
Rear: Bridgestone Battmax BT45

I bought this bike reasantly, so I don't know why te previeus owner bought these tires.
I'm experiencing instibility while steering at higher speeds (140 KM/h). I've not tried to change de tire pressure, so that could help. And it's important to know that I live in the Netherlands, so it's raining a lot. I don't have a car, so the tires have to perform well in wett conditions.

Which tires do you advise? I'm very thankfull for your advise!

It could be a number of things really. Mismatched tires is certainly a possibility.

Start with your air pressure though. Set it to the manual and go from there. You may need to adjust slightly depending on your weight.

Pop the bike on the centerstand and grab the rear tire and try to shake it back and worth. If it shakes, then the swingarm bushings are worn and need to replaced.

With the bike still on the centerstand, put weight on the back so the front comes up. The steering should turn smoothly from side to side with no slop or notching.

Check your alignment as well and make sure your tires are straight. I think you have solid rims so you don't need to worry about spokes being loose.

Best part is all these checks can be done in about 30 minutes.

After that, check tire age. Hard tires can do weird things.

I would not run a radial tire on these bikes, as they were not designed for radials.  Radial tires are made differently, and bikes which come with them from the factory, were designed for this type of tire.  Your bike was designed to run on bias ply tires only.

I would suggest two new, matching tires.  The best wet traction tires I've found are Pirelli MT66 Route tires.  Rode four days in the rain, two up, bike overloaded, back in 2009 -- a '79 CB750K.  The bike felt like it was glued to the roadway, slightly leaning, at 60 MPH/95 KPH, in curves.  They're the only tire I will run on after that.

Otherwise, if you have a tire in mind, type its name into your preferred search engine, looking for reviews:  "Pirelli MT66 Route tire review".  Best of luck.  Cheers!

I run Dunlop 404 tires on two of my CB 750s, and really like them. They do not follow rain groves, and stick like glue when wet.

I don't know if he needs to stay with biased ply tires. He has a 1991 nighthawk and the shop manual does not specify. the owners manual also does not specify. So any tire that is the right size should be fine.
